Assoc Prof RW (Bill) Carter (PhD)
 
Bill Carter is Associate Director of the Sustainability Research Centre at the University of the Sunshine Coast. 

Prior to his full time research appointment with the Research Centre, Dr Carter was discipline leader for USC’s Environmental Science Program, which included the Masters by coursework in Climate Change Adaptation. 

Before this, Bill was with the University of Queensland and responsible for their environmental tourism programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 

Before entering academia, Bill worked as a consultant to the three levels of government and international NGOs in the areas of tourism and conservation management and at a senior administration level in park management with the Queensland Government and the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works. 

Bill was responsible for the legislation drafting instructions for the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area and has been called as an expert witness for Commissions of Inquiry in Australia. 

Dr Carter has led numerous research projects relating to heritage resource management (lead or co-chief Investigator on over $5m of competitive research grants); and, since 2000, has authored or co-authored 8 book chapters and 40 refereed papers in this area.  His research focus is on tourism and cultural change and adaptive management.

Bill has successfully supervised more than 30 postgraduate research projects and given keynote addresses or invited seminars in Australia, Indonesia, China, Canada, United States, Thailand, and across the South Pacific. 

Dr Carter is Co-editor of the Australasian Journal of Environmental Management
